Electronic Golf Swing Coach - The head tracking was accomplished by using inexpensive MEMS gyros and accelerometers, a small battery powered microprocessor, a microphone and a speech chip all residing in the unit clipped to a hat. This unit allowed us to track the head from the stillness of the setup position through the swing, to the impact of the ball, in all six degrees of freedom.
The resulting device is able to give instant tonal feedback at the time the golfer’s head moved outside of the given parameter set. Two seconds after the end of the swing, we communicated to the user by verbal feedback, the movement that caused the infraction. The power in this device lay in its ability during a golf swing to give instant feedback, allowing the golfer to re-train muscle memory towards a consistent swing.
We designed a custom PDA that is RF linked to the head unit to store individual swing data and show the golfer an animation of the most recent incorrect head movement. Swing data can then be uploaded from the PDA to a website. The pro can access the website, analyze trends and re-set individual parameters for the user as necessary. The pro can then send these new parameters to the user via e-mail and through the PDA web link re-write the parameters to the head unit. The head unit is currently in production and will sell for approximately $200.00 retail.
