The Fatty original started as an experiment in materials. By using Bamboo as the primary grip material, We pushed the boundary of knife manufacturing. It pushed back! Realizing that the cost would be prohibitive to produce and manufacture, we along with Gerber came up with a viable and cost effective solution. A soft touch material was chosen to enhance the comfort and usability of the Fatty Clip Knife. Another attribute the Fatty possesses is the unique way the rear clip mimics the outer lines of the knife handle. This allows the user to better clip and unclip the knife from the users pocket. The blade on the Fatty is shorter and stubby.
The Shortcut was a response for the need of a smaller pocket multi-tool. We studied what would be the most important/used tools on a multi-tool to accommodate a small form factor and still be effective. With the Shortcut, we also allowed for customized outer skins and the option of a mini-plier head in place of a scissors.
The Obsidian Knife bridges the need for a multi-tool and a fully functioning knife. We looked at the most essential tools being used and stripped it down to two tools with multiple functions. Along with the added tools, we incorporated an innovative push button lock and slide safety for the knife blade for one handed deployment. When the tools are closed it mimics a lock back mechanism found on other common knives. It has a clip for easy wearable pocket storage.
As with most knives, deployment of the primary blade is one of the most important features. The Crusader addresses this by using a top finger assist combined with a scallop in the handle that allows for easier blade deployment. Another attribute the Crusader possesses is the unique way the rear clip mimics the outer lines of the knife handle. This allows the user to better clip and unclip the knife from the users pocket. The blade on the Crusader is thicker as well.

Gerber Knives and Mulit Tools

The purpose of the project was to identify and design new product lines with innovative features and unique materials not usually associated with knives. To generate many design variants we surveyed the competition, looked at the history of edged products, and for inspiration within our world today. We generated demographic profiles, Psychographic boards, and two-dimensional concepts for mechanisms and styling concepts.

The intended users are outdoor enthusiasts, which range from mountaineers to the sportsman who demand high quality outdoor gear at an affordable price.
