BBS - Mini Cooper Alloy Wheel Program - Following the success of my work with BBS while at BMW, I developed an accessory wheel program when working on the Mini project. The design challenge was the 4-bolt stud pattern versus contemporary styling and 5 spokes!
Z3 Accessories Program Concept Sketch - Purely for inspiration, and in response to watching the UK's TVR Tuscan Challenge racing series - I sketched a Z3 racer with a V8 engine and speedster look. The idea being to promote the accessory line by creating a bonafide racing heritage, further giving the products brand authenticity. From this sketch, I designed wheels and developed aerodynamic body work, and a 'speedster' fairing that concealed the fabric soft top when stowed. Roll hoops came later on the 6 cylinder version of the Z3.
BBS - BMW Styling 042 Alloy Wheel - What started as a Z3 specific wheel for the aftermarket sales only, became one of BMW's all time best selling wheels. It also marked the introduction of special 2-piece construction and titanium bolt fastening system. One of the bolt positions is the air valve. Design award winner!
MINI Cooper S 18" 4-spoke alloy wheel - In this image I added the wheels in Photoshop and also lowered the car to a more level stance - suggestive of competition suspension. The wheel design is retro-modern, and evocative of both the classic 60's rose petal mini racing wheels, and also the 4-spoke Revolution alloy wheel used in the 70's. This design looks harmonious with the modern day MINI, especially as the car has such large wheel openings and arches.
MINI Cooper S 'Rose Petal' 18" Alloy Wheel - Inspired by the John Cooper designed 'rose petal' magnesium wheels of the 60's, and also the classic Revolution alloy wheel of the 70's - this wheel combines both designs into a contemporary 4 -spoke aftermarket wheel.
Rover MGF Styling Package Prototype - Pre-production prototype of the final chosen design direction for the body styling package. This was developed both in the styling studio and at MIRA's wind tunnel. Better downforce was achieved at the front and rear improving high speed stability, along with the desired increase in cooling efficiency and additional lighting.
Rover MGF Sports Styling Package Concepts - Part of a series of concept renderings to explore various alternative body styling package options, lowered sports suspension, more aggressive wheels, and aerodynamic aids. Also, it was desirable at the time to increase cooling efficiency and add spotlights or foglights.
Gibson 3200 (RMS) Watt Amplifier - Massively powerful and stable music signal amplifier relies on careful design of the electronics and efficient cooling. Twin internal fan assisted wind tunnels blow cold air over the heat sinks in this case, and the industrial design was shaped around such philosophy.
Gibson Titan 3200 Amplifier - Engine cover removed, you can see the twin wind tunnel cooling system and air intakes with venturi inlet profiles. Note the recessed switches and thoughtful design layout at the rear of this amplifier.
Alesis CLX Compressor/Limiter - Designed with elegance and sophistication in mind, at a time when studio electronics tended to be black boxes with generic knobs. Going silver and taking a high end European design approach more akin to Hi-Fi equipment gave this product line instant brand identity.
Alesis RA Amplifiers. - Designed for speed to market and to appeal to a broader market of home recording musicians. Successfully sold at Guitar Center and brought Alesis much needed revenue at a difficult time.
M-Audio Axiom MIDI Keyboards - Designed by myself and Harald Belker (Minority Report concept designer). These keyboards quickly became a prolific choice for electronic musicians and are now considered iconic.
Alesis AirFX & AirSYNTH - DJ or Electronic musician's Infra-Red Beam sound effects controller. Moving your hand over the beam interrupts the IR signal and allows you physically alter and shape the mood of the music flowing through your fingers.
Magellan Roadmate Portable GPS - Designed as a concept for a consumer focus group study, this portable GPS device attaches in your car, or can be removed and used remotely as a video player and digital camera. Front panel is a touch screen GUI interface.
Magellan GPS Touch Screen Sports Watch - Conceptual design, developed as part of a series of GPS sports watch user experience (UX) studies. UI design process involved benchmarking competitor's products through extensive field testing; involving trail running and mountain biking to gauge usability and value of feedback functions/features.
KRK VXT Studio Monitors - A true family of sonically sweet and accurate near field monitors, designed to carry on familiar visual cues of brand identity, yet embrace contemporary form and manufacturing technology. These are now an industry leader in performance and marketshare.
KRK Expose E8B Studio Monitor - Designed while consulting for KRK, the E8B features a beryllium tweeter, Kevlar woofer and molded enclosure with non-parallel internal walls for ultimate sound performance. Individual vertical heatsinks provide separate cooling for the Class A bi-amplified system.
JBL Project Array Series - JBL contracted me to design for manufacturing, a project that was essentially a black box prototype. By adding the mechanical engineering team of nFuzion, we were able to resolve many of the mechanical design challenges, and create all final production specifications and 3D files. This included the complex and critical surfacing of the bi-radial horn sections. This design embodies a unique combination of pro-audio and esoteric high end audio performance.
JBL Project Array Series - Here is the front view of the center channel, shown with the speaker covers removed. In this aspect, you can see the complex surfacing we were required to achieve, while integrating two separate bi-radial horns into one molding. The larger horn is the mid-range, while the smaller is a high-frequency driver.
Apogee Lighting EVO 2000 - Following years using markers, this was my first attempt at Photoshop rendering!! This product was Apogee's first moving theater light, motorized and computer controlled. You will have seen these in action at large rock concert and outdoor venues.
Touch Screen GUI - User interface design project for in flight entertainment. This particular screen was one in a sequence of steps during movie selection. Designed in Adobe CS4 and Flash.
TV Content Program UI - Design a simple and easy to navigate UI and UX for new interactive TV content using a motion sensing 3D camera.
Siemens NX CAD model - Early NX training exercise accurately measuring and then building an existing product, followed by sending it for rapid prototyping using an Objet Polyjet 3D printer.
Cleveland VP 509 Mallet - Still trying to squeeze my automotive design passion into everything I work on, this putter is no exception! This design however is functional in intent by placing weight around the peripheral for stability throughout the golfer's swing. Yellow central insert is rubber for vibration damping, but primarily is a patented visual alignment feature, when viewed from the playing position.
HDLUX Military Tactical Flashlight - This is a tactical flashlight using an HID Xenon bulb. Casing is a special alloy that is extruded and CNC machined. Designed to be waterproof, shockproof, therefore extremely rugged and durable in the harshest conditions - particularly in the combat zone. I designed this for a start up company along with colleagues from nFuzion, an engineering consultancy. Together we developed the mechanical design and all 3D production files.
Cleveland VP 109 Blade Style Putter - One piece forged and CNC milled face putter. A design evolution of the VP1, and utilizing a patented 'Dual-Axis' visual alignment system.
Nike Driver Concept - USGA rules determine that a golf club should be plain in shape, however there is more freedom to design the undersides (sole) of the clubs. This concept was designed with a flowing recessed area adding torsional stiffness and improving sound quality at the point of impact.
Nike Machspeed Iron - Latest Nike SQ Iron - now branded Machspeed. Strong automotive design influences over high moment of inertia (MOI) geometry. Cut outs on sole design reduce contact drag to maximize impact potential energy. Aggressive look is intended to be suggestive of inherent power and straight line speed.
