Avenida Norte - Recife
Term 3, Housing & Urbanism MA
Recife, Brazil, Spring 2014 (group project)
The workshop focused on Recife’s main corridor, Avenida Norte. The challenge is its radical conditions along the way.
Avenida Norte connects the city at provincial and national level, but not to local degree. Causing people segregation.
The project thus looked at Avenida Norte as the spine of a productive area, where the various resources should be easily accessible and shared between neighborhoods, particularly between the favela communities on the northern side.
So we identified 4 principle sites for intervention. Each with distinct geographical and productive value. Thus implementing distinct housing types for low income populations, while offering incremental live-work units. Allowing individual owners to open up business if desired. Each site is properly linked to a transit system that will run along Avenida. Linking the various neighborhoods along Avenida, enhancing the distinct productive corridors.
