The backpackers’ lightweight alternative to cast iron. Apinex is a cooking system of 3 parts. Each has a double walled shell with a cavity of wax. The light weight wax traps and disperses the heat evenly, letting Apinex be used for ember baking.
The result of Apinex was a vigorous exploration of new material applications, searching for a solution that was light weight , unbreakable, and with specific thermal statistics.
The nature of Apinex's use requires that it be capable of compacting down to take up minimum space.
As well as compaction, Apinex expands to open up options for cooking and baking while camping.
A second prototyping attempt was tested in Ecuador. The prototype consists of spun aluminum walls containing with a 18th inch thick cavity of wax, to trap heat. The parts have been anodized and temporarily secured with a high temperature aluminum tape. The application of wax was successful, while Apinex still has many manufacturing kinks to be worked out.
