The film centres on friends, Milly and Jess, who take a trip to Haworth. As a proud Yorkshire lass it was no challenge at all to make these tourism posters showing off Yorkshire in all its glory for dressing around the town. Most of the images are actually of Totley, South Yorkshire, just a short bus ride from my house, but credit to Jeff Toye for grabbing some images of Haworth for me on the recce!
There's lots of fun and games with public transport on this trip, so the girls need to consult various timetables. Because I'm a sick, sick individual, all of these timings are actually acurate between stations in West Yorkshire.
In Haworth, Millie and Jess spend the night at The Cow & Calf Hotel. The brief was that everything should be quite twee and prim.
The Cow & Calf was also supposed to be lightly Bronte Sisters themed, so I designed some posters and pictures for the reception area.
You can just about see a couple of the Bronte posters in this shot (copyright New Sparta Films/S Films)
One of the key graphic props I had to make was a copy of Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering Heights,' plus an engraved plate illustration for one of its pages. Funnily, I use this engraved style of shading a lot in my own work now, but at this point, I'd never done it before and it looks so cringily bad to me now!
Milly's husband Kit opens a music/audio shop. Here are a few ideas I came up with for the shop logo. The brief was for it to be super cool. With the name "Soundz" I felt I was fighting a losing battle with this brief from the start, but I soldiered on...
The shopfront had glass double doors, so Amanda wanted a big, statement graphic to go on these. Top row is my initial ideas. We developed the towering speakers and soundwaves imagery, with the feedback being "more is more."
We also needed some cool artwork for the shop walls. These were my suggestions.
I also made some grungy music posters to decorate Kit's room
Meanwhile, Jessica's husband has a far less glamorous job on an oil rig. I made lots of signage to aid the illusion that our land-locked location (a teacher's staffroom if I remember rightly!) was dangerously far out to sea. We made most of the posters quite retro to add to the feeling that Jago was far away and neglected.
Jago receives recruitment letters and his employment contract through the post. I remember being especially pleased with the postmark on the envelope!
Logo development for a high-end wig maker
Sadly, by the end of the film, Milly has to go into a hospice and is on various cancer medications
One of those weird clearance jobs, I had to make a sign for the Ladies' Pond because the Corporation of London wouldn't allow us to use the real one, enter: the Consortium of London!
I always enjoy the little tasks where you collaborate with the costume department. These were designs to be embroidered on Milly's childrens' school uniforms
I also managed to fit in some good old-fashioned prop-making with these hand-made Christmas/New Year decorations and Valentine's cards

Miss You Already (Feature Film, 2014)

This was my first real feature film as full-on Graphic Designer and taught me why the Graphic Designer is always the first to turn up in the Prop Room weeping. Very grateful to Production Designer, Amanda McArthur for encouraging me and giving me chances even though I had no idea what I was doing!
