Project 1: 6 Elements of Design compositions - This piece was the first work I created, and it allowed me to experiment with shapes and sizes. This was a struggle, as the assignment included the limitations of only using black and white. In this piece, I created a sunflower, gazing up at a beating sun.
Project 1: 6 Elements of Design compositions - This piece was my 'mod' design. It felt to me to be slightly 60's to 70's feel, and was a fun work to create. With this piece, it felt natural to only use black and white colors.
Project 1: 6 Elements of Design compositions - Within in this piece, I play with size and proportion. I also experimented with putting objects off-center, which was a difficult concept for me to deal with. This is because I usually prefer for everything to be aligned and centered to create a more even, neat look.
Project 1: 6 Elements of Design compositions - Within this piece, I used hexagons to create a honeycomb feel. However, upon showing my two younger brothers, they both immediately thought I had been inspired by a soccer ball when I created this. I enjoyed making this piece because it allowed me to use repetition and shapes in a new way.
Project 1: 6 Elements of Design compositions - Within this piece, I experimented with overlapping different sizes of stars as well as created a unique path. My initial thought was to create a comet, or shooting star object with the singular dark star towards the top of the piece for added interest.
Project 1: 6 Elements of Design compositions - In this piece, I wanted to reverse the negative space and focus on making the white hexagons pop off the page. I also enjoyed creating such a drastic difference between sizes, in utilizing the larger and smaller hexagons together, lined up next to each other.
Project 2: Color (1 Expressive color composition and 2 Color theory composition) - Within the three pieces for Project 2, my theme was children's books. This piece is created from the book, 'Mouse Paint.' In this book, three mice get into the three primary colors of paint: red, yellow and blue. They run around, spilling and splattering the painting. This piece was my interpretation of their adventure with the paint.
Project 2: Color (1 Expressive color composition and 2 Color theory composition) - For Project 2, my theme was children's books. In this piece, the inspiration came from the book, 'Rainbow Fish.' Within the piece, the fish has one special, 'shiny' scale. This scale makes him an important, and special fish amongst the rest. The bubbles around him add to the feel of an underwater scene.
Project 2: Color (1 Expressive color composition and 2 Color theory composition) - For Project 2, my theme was based around different children's books. For this piece, I used 'The Hungry Caterpillar.' In the book, the caterpillar eats, and eats, and eats until he is about to burst. This represents the feeling of gluttony. The caterpillar is gluttonous because no matter how much he eats, he is always hungry for more food.
Project 3:Typography compositions (6 Expressive words and 3 Ornamental type compositions) - Within Project 3: 3 Ornamental Type compositions, I used my initials to create the three separate compositions. In this work, I created my design around the letter 'e' in a elaborate font. I copied the 'e' on its left and right side as well as upside down on both sides.
Project 3:Typography compositions (6 Expressive words and 3 Ornamental type compositions) - Within Project 3: 3 Ornamental Type compositions, I used my initials to create the three separate compositions. Within this piece, I used a capital letter 'A' and created chains of smaller a's running up and down the right side of the letter like ants. Get it? 'A' is for ant!
Project 3:Typography compositions (6 Expressive words and 3 Ornamental type compositions) - Within Project 3: 3 Ornamental Type compositions, I used my initials to create the three separate compositions. For this composition, I chose the letter 'g', and created three flowers out of it. I did this by enlarging each 'g', and then rotating it until the proper degree, so that it created a daisy shape.
Project 3:Typography compositions (6 Expressive words and 3 Ornamental type compositions) - Within Project 3: 6 Expressive Words, I chose words that evoked a feeling behind each of them. For this piece, I chose the word 'fuzzy.' The brown color reminded me of a teddy bear, and circle in the piece is reminiscent of a teddy bear's tummy. The font depicts the teddy bear's soft fur, and describes a stuffed animal that is extremely loved by a little girl or boy.
Project 3:Typography compositions (6 Expressive words and 3 Ornamental type compositions) - Within Project 3: 6 Expressive Words, I chose words that evoked a feeling behind each of them. For this piece, the word 'love' works easily and simply. It does not try to demand the attention nor stretch the full-length of the screen. It is sweet and polite, simply sitting in the upper right corner. The soft pink colors help to convey a feeling of all things lovely. The font reminded me of that which would be used in the writing of a love letter, which was my inspiration for this piece.
Project 3:Typography compositions (6 Expressive words and 3 Ornamental type compositions) - Within Project 3: 6 Expressive Words, I chose words that evoked a feeling behind each of them. For this piece, I chose the word 'obnoxious,' and used the different angles to make the image seem disorganized. Then, I chose the color red, to symbolize chaos and disaster. Overall, this piece absolutely screams 'obnoxious' to me.
Project 3:Typography compositions (6 Expressive words and 3 Ornamental type compositions) - Within Project 3: 6 Expressive words, I chose words that created an emotional feeling within. For this piece, I took the word 'conservative,' in the sense of clothing and dress. Conservative dress is very neat and proper, with square edges and colors that are not loud nor draw attention. I contrasted the navy with the white letters to keep the design tidy and concise.
Project 3:Typography compositions (6 Expressive words and 3 Ornamental type compositions) - Within Project 3: 6 Expressive Words, I chose words that evoked a feeling behind each of them. For this piece, the word 'fly' makes me feel hopeful and light inside. When I look at this piece, I feel as if I can 'fly' right off of the page, and am renewed inside again.
Project 3:Typography compositions (6 Expressive words and 3 Ornamental type compositions) - Within Project 3: 6 Expressive Words, I chose words that evoked a feeling behind each of them. For this piece, I wanted the word 'sparkle' to be literal, and feel like you could almost sense the radiance emerging from the page as you look at the word.
Project 4:Good design/bad design (redesigned piece only) - In this piece, I found a 'bad ad,' or an advertisement that did a poor job artistically expressing the fantastic features of their business. I was able to take bright, eye-catching colors and lovely images, and transform the advertisement into something more appealing. In addition, I went back and changed the body copy into a font that was more readable on the script copy on the top and bottom of the advertisement.
Project 4: Logo - For this piece, I took the words of 'inertia publishing co.,' and added bright colors to make the business seem modern and approachable, while keeping the palette to two colors to hold a sense of professionalism. Then, I added arrows of the words to give the sense that the publishing company was 'going places' and 'headed in new directions.'
Project 5:Corporate identity package (logo, business card and letterhead design) - For this project, I had to design a business card for an editor of an upcoming publishing company. I wanted to keep the design sleek, yet make it seem fun and modern. The colors I chose and the arrows helped this cause, while making John Vasquez seem approachable and professional.
Project 5:Corporate identity package (logo, business card and letterhead design) - This letterhead design was tied to the matching logo and business card I developed. The arrows on the lefthand side signal to the business' contact information, while the arrow on the righthand side, allows the writer ease of spacing yet still builds off of the original logo design.
Magazine Cover - The magazine cover for 'Eye on Design' depicts several of Leonardo Da Vinci's work, highlighting the "Mona Lisa.' I sampled several colors from the different pieces of artwork and transferred them to the bold colors of the titles throughout this piece.
Project 6:Magazine cover/spread - Within the pages of the magazine 'Eye On Design,' this spread depicts further works from DaVinci as well as a pull quote. The color of the quote is sampled from DaVinci's painting 'The Woman,' highlighted above.
Project 6:Magazine cover/spread - Within the pages of the magazine 'Eye On Design,' this spread depicts further works from DaVinci as they are positioned around the text of the article. These pieces do a fantastic job of representing how past artwork still continues to influence modern works today through their colors, textures and themes.
Project 7: Event Poster - This poster depicts Beyoncé Knowles onstage during a live performance. The wording plays off of her 'onstage persona,' Sasha Fierce. I created this poster to promote her upcoming 'I AM...' tour coming to Milwaukee on May 7th at the Bradley Center.
