Senior Thesis - CornerStone - A Foundation for Building Relationships
Inspiration - Children with disabilities.
The Problem
The Epidemic
The Epidemic
Inspiration - Sex in the media affects young people.
Location of Proposed Design - The site is nestled among three major at-risk high schools--Long Beach Poly, Cabrillo, and Renaissance.
The Solution
Inspiration - CornerStone was inspired by a desire to encourage young people and to provide them the self-esteem and guidance to reach high.
Goals
Goals
Material Concepts - Material inspiration came from whimsical details. Purple is used sparingly for emphasis on certain areas.
Adjacency Diagrams - Adjacencies are very important to ensure practical use of the space. Open spaces are grouped within the first level while personal spaces are home on the second level. The art studio spaces are located on the eastern side of the building to take advantage of natural light. The daycare facility is nestled next to the outdoor space (for outdoor play). Loud spaces are grouped on the same side of the building. The cafe acts as a hub and it spans both floors to connect the volume.
Concept Sketches / Development - CornerStone was developed with literal building-blocks that interlock and connect. These pieces connect three-dimensionally with varying proportion. The central box is home to the cafe. This box spans both floors, further connecting the space. Interlocking boxes create dynamic circulation corridors.
Level 1: Floor Plan and RCP - Space includes: study lounge, computer lab, ceramics, galleries, cafe lounge, painting/illustration, dark room, lounge, day care.
The datum of the original building is referenced with the grid-like system of soffits over the open floorplan. White areas are open to above to create dynamic double-height volumes.
View A: Gallery Hall, Cafe, Painting / Illustration - Art is very important at CornerStone. Studio space (right) is provided for teens to create their own art. The centrally located corridor serves as a gallery space.
View B: Cafe Lounge - Computer labs in conjunction with frank, sexual education books are available in the study lounge. The cafe provides teens a place to snack and visit.
View C: Cafe - Cafe bar with painting / illustration to the right.
View D: Lounge - A lounge space is provided for safe entertainment--pool tables, vintage arcade games, and a plasma tv for movie showings.
Materials - Materials are intended to be fairly gender-neutral. Several materials are green: recycled aluminum shavings in counter-tops, carpet tiles, bamboo, and glass, to name a few. Application of color is used for punch.
Level 2: Floor Plan and RCP - Spaces include: nurse's office, private counselor offices, study / cafe lounge, three classrooms.
The RCP emphasizes the existing datum of the building with subtle soffits (easily seen in the classrooms), exposing the rough I-Beams. The purple soffit reinforces the 'central box' that connects the double-height volume.
View E: Cafe Lounge - The secondary lounge cafe on the second level connects the three classrooms with the private counseling and nurse offices.
View F: Ceramics and Rock Lounge - Teens are provided a studio environment (below) to work on painting and illustration, ceramics, and photography as well as a gallery space to display their work. The intent is to provide a cathartic means of expression as well as a gallery space to display their work.
Elevation 2 (West)
Elevation 1 (South) - Reference to the ornate historic detailing is in the application of a graphic thread. This thread meanders through the space, connecting the boxes in all dimensions. Butterflies are symbolic of growth and the journey patrons make while in the facility. The concept: teens enter CornerStone one way and hopefully, will emerge more mature and as ‘something’ different.
