Oxytocin and Trust in Cognitive Agents

This study investigated the effect of oxytocin, a neuromodulator that has been found to reduce amygdala activity and hormonal stress responses and thus give rise to a number of positive social approach behaviors, on people’s trust in cognitive agents(other human, computer and avatar).

In the experiment, subject were given recommendations from cognitive agents when performing a number guessing task. The recommendation from cognitive agents have different level of reliability(50% and 100%). One group of subjects inhaled oxytocin before task. The other group inhaled placebo. Performance, and self-report trust constructs were measured.
