‘ Burning Sky of Kennacraig’ has been painted with a Palette knife and a sponge to give that rich, bold texture of this winter sunset. The water imitates the sky like glass and the cold blue clouds surround the scar of light as it reaches across the loch, only the silhouette of the mountains pierce the reflection.
‘Merganser on the Water’ is of a group of Merganser birds during breeding season, noticeable due to their brightly coloured bills, they can be found on the west coast of Scotland and they usually flock together in groups. This shows a gathering of these birds heading towards their local source of food, eager to g et to their destination they muscle in between each other diving in the water and feeding as they swim.
‘ Call of the Great Prince ‘ symbolizes the shear power and Majesty of the male Red Deer, an iconic creature situated across Scotland, found o?en along the west coast. In this painting he is calling out to challenge rival Stags to a dual, to show off his awesome strength and might, his coat shimmers as the sun sets for the evening, he remains vigilant.

Cormorants are fantastic fishing birds which are able to fly in the air and swim underwater, they have long necks and beaks which are excellent for catching fish but they will occasionally bask in the sun and show off their feathers from time to time, though their feathers are black this piece emphasise the different colours which they reflect, representing the colours of the sea and the habitat of the amazing bird.

This piece shows the elegance of this magnificent bird and its determination to withstand the elements to obtain it‘s catch. The Rain effect was created using the influence of gravity, just like actual rain falls so too did the paint,the heron’s legs are faded to create the atmospheric approach of the heron moving through the rain.
‘Retreat to the Sinking Sun’ shows the tide receding back to the ocean from West Port beach while the sun burns the sky between Ireland and the Scottish island Islay as it sets. When the water retreats back it leaves behind smooth sand ready for a new day, this piece was in portrait view to capture the movement of the water leaving the beach.
‘Cunning Wanderer’ is a painting of a Red Fox found throughout Scotland even on the west coast, they are nocturnal hunters and are very intelligent, this piece captures the curiosity of the creature and it‘s cunning nature of being able to work things out, he remains constantly alert for prey and danger which this painting have a sense of tension about it.
‘Prince of the Highlands’ is a simple yet effective piece, it represents the majesty of a fully mature Stag standing proud. Stags are a prominent figure of the highlands of Scotland and royalty among the animal kingdom, this drawing captures the essence of that power through this simple stature.
‘Small Adventurer’ is a drawing / painting of a small field mouse o?en found among the fields of the west coast of Scotland. He is clinging onto a tall strand of long grass while eating tiny insects to keep him going for the day, his whiskers let him know of his surrounding and his ears are listening out for potential predators such as the buzzard or eagle. This piece demonstrates the agility of this creature in that it‘s adaptable to it’s environment and no matter how small you are still very important.
‘River of the Rest’ is a painting of Butter Bridge at theRest and Be Thankful, a valley situated on the west coast of Scotland near Loch Lomond. this piece was created using nothing but a palette knife to give that rough texture to emphasise the ruggedness of the landscape. In the foreground there is the long grassed banks of the river flowing under the bridge to the snow covered mountains of the Rest, a beautiful place that expresses the rawness of this land.
‘Waiting on the Cliff-top’ shows the shape and characteristics of the Atlantic Puffin, which can be found among the western islands of Scotland. It shows the stance of the Puffin, alert to the sight of fish, while perched on the cliff-tops looking out to the open sea.
‘Whiskers of the Sea Dog’ is a painting of a common seal, found on the shores of the west coast of Scotland. In this piece the seal is alert to it‘s surroundings, they are very curious creatures and feel safer in the water, this seal is on land so there is an expression of uncertainty. A prominent feature of the seal are the whiskers, they are used to determine the size of an object and are essential for catching fish, they are exaggerated in this picture to emphasise their importance to this amazing creature.
‘ Spirit of the Forest’ is of a Scottish Pine Martin, usually found in the west coast. These creatures are one of Scotland‘s oldest inhabitants and they are responsible for creating an eerie noise in the woods at night. The active background represents the thick forest floor and the abstract colouring of the fur symbolises the vibrant nature of this animal.

This exhibition represents what makes the west coast of Scotland such a remarkable and magical place. Through studying the area these pieces emphasize the personality of this landscape and the creatures that inhabit it.
