Cuir Bouilli Chair
Cuir Bouilli Chair,
Boiled leather and maple
The chair received the Young Design Award at the Interior Design Show in Toronto, 2012.
Cuir Bouilli, boiled leather, is an ancient
method for constructing armor. The boiling causes the leather to harden, but for a short time the leather is still flexible and can be stretched over a mold to form a scale. The process is unpredictable and guided by chance. This chair was created as a reaction against the highly controlled computer operations that often dominate design processes and removes the designer from the physical yet rewarding involvement with their piece.
