This form study demonstrates my process. In contrast to my sharp, edgy door handle, I wanted to go the opposite direction, creating a soft, quiet, beautiful box.
My development process was a mix of sketching and foam models. The ultimate form was arrived at in a model.
This form is a beautifully integrated piece, playing off of diagonals. The billow moves from diagonally down, as well as from a side view - indicating the direction the pencil enters. The negative spaces between move diagonally down, and the top view oval shape recreates the diagonal left to right. The form invites your hand to hold it while sharpening, and as a beautiful object, with minimal footprint that you'd show off on your desk.
