This is the "retro" package I created for Lowes to commemorate GE Lighting's Incandescent bulb. The image on the front is actually a General Electric advertisement from the 1950's, and the iconic GE logo used is also their vintage design. The back panel is the only place on the package where our modern brand and style are used. This package was limited edition, specifically for the Lowes stores.

This LED bulb, in its special edition packaging, was given to the corporate leadership staff of the GE Bucyrus Lamp Plant in order to show appreciation for all they have done, and continue to do, for the company. The design shows the five core values that GE and Bucyrus hold highest, and the progress the company makes as they continually move forward at the top of the lighting world.

GE's main automotive bulbs became classified as "Long Life" just after I started working there. As a designer, I was responsible for the entire Automotive product line's look, so I worked with the brand manager and Automotive product manager to come to the decisions on color (from yellow to green), and subtle changes to the main graphics and back panel. The aim was to show improvement within the product itself without making the packaging unrecognizable to the regular Automotive customers.

The Nighthawk Sport subdivision of the GE Automotive product line is a very popular one, so with this design we aimed to emphasize the fact that these particular bulbs produce up to 50% more light than standard automotive bulbs. Giving it a sleek, athletic look was also very important - hence the blue detailing used, and the metallic look to the banner wrapping around the bulb's blister.

CFL bulbs are leading the way in home energy savings these days, but GE also wanted to be sure not to make consumers wary of too much change, too soon. The package design we drafted for the Soft White look of the CFL bulbs pairs the green that consumers have come to connect with energy savings with a simple, clear design explaining the benefits of lowering the consumer's energy cost.

GE's Reveal line of CFL bulbs is among its most popular, and Target requested this 4-pack to be designed specifically for their retail needs. Combining my knowledge of Target's brand standards with GE's designs that Target had deemed most successful in the past, I created this look for them - which you can still see on Target shelves today.

LED bulbs are widely known to be the bulbs of the future, of energy saving and of long-term thinking on the part of consumers. I worked with this package - both the design and the actual diecut of the package itself - from its very conception. It is innovative as both a design concept and as a package structure. A true original, it stands out on the shelf no matter if it is placed near its competitors or among its GE LED family.

GE's Consumer & Industrial (commonly known as C&I) bulb packages were created for each product line. C&I packages contain the same bulb as our consumer packages, but these are sold to commercial customers such as hotels, contractors, and other institutions. The design is simpler, but displays the same information and marketing messages as consumer packages would. The bulb outlines were drawn in Illustrator by me and my two coworkers for each and every product line and bulb available for C&I purchase; shown here is the popular LED A19 bulb.

Most recently, GE's Halogen bulb has been marketed, and also viewed by consumers, as a great replacement for the Incandescent bulbs - which will be illegal in the coming years. I created this sleeve design specifically for Sam's Club (using their standard striped design along the front) to make it clear to consumers that the halogen bulb uses less energy than a standard incandescent bulb, as well as exhibits the highest quality of light in the home.

With all the new energy regulations released by the government in recent years, GE wanted to create a simple way to show consumers that its products readily complied. I was asked to design an "outlet icon" to show GE's enthusiasm at being involved in the exciting world of energy savings. This icon was used on many packages (seen here on a Halogen package for Sam's Club) along with the words "Compliant with 2012 Energy Regulations".

Packaging

During my 3+ years with GE Lighting, my focus was primarily on packaging design. I produced the packaging graphics for each main product line (including the Automotive, CFL, LED, and Incandescent lines you see here), from concept to prepress, and I regularly modified the existing graphics to reflect GE's most current graphic standards. I also worked on many retailer-specific and limited edition package designs for stores like Target, Walmart, Lowes, and Sam's Club.
