UBC Bench Design

The University of British Columbia has designed a new student union building for the Vancouver campus, scheduled to be completed in 2014. The building, which is expected to receive a LEED Platinum+ certification, is currently in what they are calling design development phase III. My contribution to this space was recognized through a design competition held within the engineering department. The goal of the project was to design a sitting bench to be used within the new space. Requirements were that it was made out of 100% recycled plastic and that it provided a useful and artistic interface. This project involved considerable consideration of stakeholder interests as well as the influence of the environment on design.
Completing this allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of design ergonomics and material limitations .
