The brief for this project was to create a coffee table that had a light incorporated into it. The coffee table also had to take inspiration from the chair that we had previously designed and created.
The Rhythm coffee table takes its inspiration from the patterns that sound waves make. The design of the table is a contrast between calm and turbulent elements. The design, much like the design of the Ash chair, takes much of its influence from minimalist movement. It is very basic yet very complex. The shapes of the sound waves in the table create a lot of interesting negative spaces which are highlighted when the light is turned on. This lighting shines down on the ground so as to create a warm, ambient atmosphere that is inviting and relaxing.The table is made predominantly from cottonwood with one layer of Kiaat. The contrast between the light Cottonwood and the dark Kiaat shows the clear influence of the design of the Ash chair on the Rhythm coffee table.
