For this project we were looking at mass produced products, specifically pocket lighters. The aim of the project was to deconstruct and redesign an ordinary pocket lighter.
The Pyre lighter is my redesigned version of an electric BIC lighter. The idea behind the lighter was to create an object that had a more sophisticated and classic feel than the ordinary pocket lighter in order to create a bond with the user. By creating a bond with the user it means that the user will look after the lighter more and not lose it as often as normal lighters. The design is based on the vintage gold Dunhill lighters of yesteryear. The lighter has a classic rectangular shape that fits easily into the hand, pocket or cigarette box. The re-design consists of simple shapes that are ergonomically sound. Some new features include the transparent window and a re-filler valve. These have been added to increase the lifespan of the lighter and enable it to be used for longer than the original BIC lighter.
