Living Hat
Having lived in San Francisco and visited the California Academy of Science frequently, I have always been intrigued by the building’s “Living Roof,” a vast rooftop garden that provides natural insulation while minimizing the city’s urban heat island effect. I was inspired by this unique and beautiful sustainability technique, so I did research on living walls and consulted botanists to find out the best way to make a hat that would support growing plant life. Using specialized materials, I was able to replicate the facade of CAS’s living roof - by way of millinery! This hat was showcased in the Sustain/Able exhibit in Boston in December of 2012.
