This Heavy Equipment Studio was an exciting opportunity to design a larger product with a stronger focus on function and problem solving in a real life application. Using the CAT brand I focused on Underground Mining to solve and simplify some issues. The vehicle is designed to combine 3 machines and mining functions into one. Drilling, Explosives and Rock Removal are all combined into this one underground mining truck. The front end was designed to be more compact in the cramped underground environment with the tires concealed within the side panels for protection. The operator's view is maximized by extending the glass lower along the side panel. The rear end is articulated with the engine in the back for ease of access. An independent drill sits across from the cockpit in view for the operator to control and the charges are placed in after drilling with a separate rotating cylinder. The heavy duty steel bucket and boom are designed to be adjusted to protect the cockpit from debris.
