I’ve designed several invitations for the American Friends of the Louvre. One highlight was a gala invitation where the design direction was to incorporate an image of the 3,750 square foot ceiling of the Salle de Bronzes created by Cy Twombly for the Louvre in 2010. In order to capture the grand and opulent feeling of the Salle de Bronzes and the festive nature of the event, we printed the invitation on a paper with a shimmery pearl finish. The sheen of this material captured the somewhat ethereal look of the ceiling itself, which, in combination with the reflected image on the back of the piece, made a loose reference to the modernist glass house where the event took place. We mounted the piece to board and finished it with a painted gold edge which evoked the molding and metals in the gallery. I also designed an invitation for the Young Patrons Circle “Soiree au Louvre” which was more edgy and hip.
