Mumbai City Logo - The city of Mumbai is known as the Gateway to India. It’s most famous landmark, also known by this name, was built to commemorate the first visit of an English queen to India. At the end of colonization, it was the departure point from which all British troops left the country. Once again this structure has meaning for the city of Mumbai. As the city emerges as the commercial center for finance, business and industry, the archway has become the passageway that the western world must pass through and the doorway at which India will greet prosperity. This being said, the logo uses elements to reflect the idea of Mumbai as the Gateway to India by incorporating the traditional Indian arch structure and a subtle keyhole that indicates the potential and value of the things behind the gate. The people of India are also essential to the Mumbai brand. While the city currently has the stigma of poverty and indifference, there is a clear wish to amend this. With the rebranding the city desires to express its concerns about the welfare of its inhabitants as it transforms itself into one of the largest cities in the world and into an economic force to reckon with. To reference the idea of the people of Mumbai in the logo, the cultural identifier the Bindi (red dot) is used above the archway. This references the citizens and helps the western audience to identify with a familiar cultural icon. Also the seven circles in the arm of the letter M reference mehndi, a traditional tattoo art form. These seven circles also have significance because they represent the seven islands that were incorporated in the creation of the city of Mumbai. The letter M is representative of Mumbai and is done in a way that the serifs and angles hint at the eastern culture of the city.
