rocking chair - The driving premise behind the object was to make a rocking chair using something under tension. The rockers are steel rods that were roughly bent before being put under tension by the cables. The chair is symmetrical from front to back. The initial lack of trust in this chair as someone approaches it and debates whether he or she should attempt to sit is part of the experience desired by the designer. Materials: ash, steel rods, airplane cable, and hardware December, 2001
the springy chair - The beginnings of this chair were with the conduit I found at a reused materials warehouse. I enjoyed working with found materials and will hopefully do more of that. I tried to make the seat comfortable and ended up using the springs as a sort of rear susspension. You can see the motion by going back and forth between the last two images. Materials: bending plywood & woodglue, large aluminum conduit, large rusty bolts, springs, & flat stock steel. May, 2002
