This Foundation Figure shows the structure and function of the main groups of biomolecules. It's intended to explain how molecular composition influences the function of cellular components.
This figure combines five levels of information (regulation, energy, compartmentation, pathways, and cellular structure) into a cohesive picture of cellular metabolism.
The last Foundation Figure in the book, this spread uses advanced biochemical concepts as a lead-in to molecular biology and genetics.

Biochemistry text

A 1st edition biochemistry text for Allied Health college students. I conceived and directed the illustration program (not the interior design) including the Foundation Figure spreads, which were a collaboration with eight contributors and a concept artist. Three Foundation Figure examples are shown here. All images © Pearson.

The purpose of Foundation Figures is to organize main concepts from several previous chapters in the book into a cohesive summary. Everything in chemistry builds on what has been previously learned, so in this way students get a functional overview of main topics and how they relate to each other.
I provided reference materials, concept thumbnails, art direction, and interpreted author feedback for the artists.
