Design & Industry Graduate Studio - This was a student-led initiative to develop a new 1600 sq. ft. graduate studio for fostering collaborative learning and building community within the department. The design incorporates a gallery, a lounge, a flex studio and classroom, a sleeping loft area, and various technology support systems. The student design and implementation team, led by Ms. Rabanal under the guidance of a faculty advisor, presented their proposal to university administration for approval and funding.
Design & Industry Graduate Studio Lounge - Lounge & Casual Meeting Area The lounge provides a comfortable and conducive environment for congregating, socializing, and informal meetings. Comfy seating have versatile cushion backs that flip up or down for sitting up or lying down. Stackable storage compartments house an informal library as well as serve as casual tables and ottomans. Suspended lighting units are made from acoustical material to further define the intimate space while aiding in absorbing sound.
Design & Industry Graduate Studio - The Trio Work Table The Trio Table can be used individually or nested together in 3’s, 4’s, or 5’s to create a collective meeting nook. The nested configuration creates a convenient opening in the center for wire management of laptops and other technology. The table as well as the stackable chairs are lightweight and extremely mobile to facilitate ultimate flexibility to meet students’ changing needs.
Prefab House Evocative of past and present nomadic lifestyles, this prefab house adapts to a variety of climates and conditions. In the cold, the southern exposure maximizes passive solar heating, while insulation panels can be easily installed. In the summer, sliding doors open fully, allowing the house to bleed out into its natural environment. The roof can be rolled up at either end for further ventilation or enjoyment of the summer nighttime sky.
