As part of Kemflo’s re-branding effort and new product offensive James Owen Design reconsidered the entire packaging aspect of their product line. After establishing the Kemflo 3D Tool Kit, we had to devise a way to align the product packaging system with the 2D branding and 3D product design language. Not only did we need to ensure that the visual aspect of the packaging design followed the “Clean and Clear” design philosophy, but that unpacking and setting up the product was “Clean and Clear” as well.
The first order of business was to establish the packaging configuration and unboxed product presentation that could be applied across a wide range of sizes and proportions including some products with accessories and some without. Larger water filtration products are mighty heavy, so scaling up the box construction to support shipping beefier products also had to be considered.
The solution: a “jewel box”-like rigid packaging configuration with a secondary insert to showcase the product and other ancillary collateral such as instruction cards and accessories. This design direction allows for easy scaling and beautiful presentation on-the-shelf and when the product is unboxed. With 8 different filter types, it is imperative to easily convey to the consumer what type of cartridge refill is needed without relying on the costumer to memorize a SKU number or filter name. We developed a color-coding system so that the consumer can quickly and easily pick out the correct refill cartridge for their particular product and application.
