Barking and Dagenham Medallion

A short project commissioned by Barking and Dagenham Council to create a fresh medallion from the newly appointed Young Mayor of the borough.

They wanted an up to date design that would represent the Youth Mayor and appeal to young people.

I decided to research what does a Mayor of a borough wear. I started with clothing. The main thing that stood out was the robe, so I began to re-imagine it so that it looks somewhat cooler and a design accessory that young people would wear. Rather than looking like a robe, I re-imagined it as a cape, an item of clothing that is regarded as cool and trendy. I also opted out of using the crest/coat-of-arms in the design as I wanted the piece to look bold and stand out more with bright colours and shapes. The borough outline is in the background, with 2 mayoral candidates to signify unity between gender and race within the borough.

I wanted the Young Mayor to be looked at as a hero of the borough for the youth.
