Our Group concept aims at bringing to light the preciousness of water. It deals with how we take water for granted, as also how we could be more sensitive towards it. We celebrate the different aspects of its preciousness. Through my individual concept I try and bring about the illusion of water - an illusion not only in terms of a visual representation, but also through our foolish illusion that water is infinite. I concentrated on the reducing amount of water on our planet.

On studying the concept, I could very quickly associate the form of water with the art of marbling. Thus I set off with the idea of marbling on paper to create my first design. The size of the artwork is 140cm*180cm

The second design which I got together was a culmination of a lot of individual ideas which I set off with. Finally I tried bringing all the doodles together in order to create this artwork inspired by the geographical landscapes from a birds eye view. I tried depicting rivers flowing through undulating terrains of land, thus trying to comment on the state of water on our planet.

The first 2 designs being very complex and elaborate, I thought of keeping the third one a little more simple. I tried simplifying forms and making them very simple and calming to look at.

The print would then go on a hammock, which I chose to be my product. The hammock is something which one can associate with comfort, and rejuvenation. I could very well associate it with an oasis, the one happy spot in a dessert. Also, I liked the idea of the way it is hung on top of everything, like it is levitating.

Woven on the jacquard, this fabric is a direct translation of one of my designs from the prints, same as the beige fabric. I have tweaked the design slightly in order to give it an Ikat effect.

Using the shrinking yarn as the weft, I have woven a twill which creates a ribbed effect on the fabric. It has also been steamed under the iron in order to make the weft shrink even more due to the heat.

Woven on a jacquard, this fabric is made using one of the designs from the print, and the colours have been reduced so as the make is weavable on the loom.

On the same lines as the previous one, the wavy lines gradually fade away. The fabric has been woven on a dobby using the lance technique.

This is a double cloth, woven on a shaded warp (dark blue gradually into light blue). One side of the fabric has a blue weft, while the other has a beige weft.

Having the collection of prints and wovens ready, the next step was to combine them and mix and match in order to bring the collection together in its true sense. Following are images of collections of fabrics which could possibly come together to make a collection.

Remember Water - An Oasis

As part of a semester exchange at the Hochschule Luzern - Design und Kunst, Switzerland, I worked on an interdisciplinary project with a group of 6 industrial designers, on the topic, ‘Open Water, Open Space'. The concept we generated, revolves around the preciousness of water and how we should be conscious of its use. As part of my individual project, I came up with a collection of prints and wovens based on the idea of an oasis.
