Tempulse is a training device for rowers to row better. Together. It is an audio-visual metronome that helps rowers to further solidify their tempo and cadence to ensure an energy and focus-efficient run on the water.
After serving five years in the US Navy back in 2002, Tony was in a car accident off of the Interstate 5. After waking up in the hospital, doctors told him that he was 99% disabled and that he could never walk again. However, with his drive to be the 1%, he taught himself how to walk by watching his one-year-old son learning to walk. Today, he can not just walk, but surfs, snowboards, plays basketball, football, and is currently the fastest adaptive rower in the country!
Tony is in an adaptive rowing category called (Trunk & Arms Mix Double). Requirements consists of: - Having a partner of the opposite sex - Fixed seats/ upper body use only - 1000 Meters distance Like any race, the strategy is to start strong (all out), coast into a nice pace (level out), increase speed (Pick-up), and give all that is left at the last 100m (all out).
His current solutions are listening for the sound when the oars rub against the oar locks and anticipating his partners motions. His current solution resulted in his partner burning out at the last 100m of the National Championships losing the opportunity to be qualified to go to the 2012 Olympics.
Relatively near to the senses, it was a series of iterations exploring various headwear. Minimal, light weight and invisibility were key terms that drove the final forms to the current design of Tempulse. The design had to fit snug to avoid discomfort, yet secured enough to withstand the constant motions of rowing.
Tempulse offers an audio and/ or visual metronome setting. The visual component pulses light according to the time set. The light is placed in the peripheral so the athlete will be informed without distractions or obstructing their view. Lights in the back offers an alternative visual cue for the partner behind.
#1. Grab your Tempulse. #2. Slide it over behind your head. #3. Hold down to turn on! Allows them to wear their favorite pair of sunglasses in junction with the product. Allowing them to still receive information in the comfort of their own glasses for those bright and sunny practice days.
User Interface: Plan practice via smart device. Tempulse syncs automatically via bluetooth. Download olympic record for added motivation. With built-in accelerometer and preset settings via smart phone/ tablet, the audio and visual cue flip-flops between the different sections of the 1000m distance. Starting with visual, then audio, back to visual, and both at the very end.
Tempulse will guide both partners to have a solid cadence in their strokes and tempo changes. When race day approaches, they’ll be set without having to rely on the product! And that their approach to the 1000m - All out, Level out, Pick-up, and All out will be energy & focus-efficient till the end.

TEMPULSE

Second term of my BFA program. Sponsored and instructed by Nike designers, the class had the privilege to work with real "adaptive atheletes". I have the honor to work with an adaptive rower, and a great guy named Anthony "Tony" Davis. I targeted the team aspect of the sport. Both, him & his partner and how important it is to row together/ as one.
