For the final project for my Introduction to Structural Engineering course, we had to construct a bridge using popsicle sticks, considering its strength, keeping it light, and also aesthetic design.
My partner and I knew that most groups would make a truss structure or the basic arch, so we opted for a completely different approach, using arches for the entire structure. The design ensures that every stick only undergoes compression and not moment forces.
Our bridge was less than half the weight of the other groups, but it was not remotely strong, holding up only 140kg before failing at a joint which was not glued properly. Other than that, I am quite pleased with the results and must say it was a great experience.
