University of Bahrain, Engineering Building
I had chosen this as my graduation 2 years ahead of time. I was attending a workshop in the University of Bahrain (UoB) and I was impressed by the vast amount of land they have and even more impressed by all the lush green trees in certain areas. I had also heard that the engineering was not in the campus as they didn't have a building built for it yet. This was when knew I was going to make a proposal for the college of Engineering.
The campus was designed by the late Architect Kenzo Tange, father of the Metabolism movement, and it was a great challenge to design something beside such a great architect. First thing I decided was that my building would stand out completely from the existing so it would not "compete" with Tanges' work, I also wanted the minaret to be a focal point for my project. The end result was a building that is mostly underground and the rest is suspended in the air. The underground spaces have great lighting and views as do the rooms that are afloat.
