original resting place of the casting
The hailstone mid-scan. The resulting mesh was nearly 800 MB large and had over 10 million faces
the process may appear psychedelic, but is just an artifact of my phones rolling shutter.

Hailstone Recreation

A professor approached me asking if I could recreate a model of the largest hailstone ever recorded and I said yes. There were originally only 2 plaster castings made and they were delicate to handle so I worked with associates i have built up at college to scan the casting with photogrammetry and and the 3d printing club to print such a large and complex model. Now that there is a model to work from, researchers can print ice molds and use it as a demonstration without fear of destroying one of the few castings left.
