Puzzle Cabinet
I really enjoy the structure of furniture joinery and the connection about my situation, like my background and wood working, eastern and western culture. I love the process of figuring out how things work, and this puzzle series of furniture really show the essence of who I am as well.
I have decided to make some pieces of furniture that not only can be packed flat, but also do not require any hardware to assemble them. This technique of assembling wood furniture without hardware has been practiced in China for over 1000 years. In design process, when I began to draw the draft of my idea, I make this piece really functional yet still able to be taken apart. Also be interesting as a puzzle where it would not be obvious how the piece is assembled or disassembled. This traditional puzzle joinery is called Kong-Ming Locker. And I have repurposed it to be my flat pack joinery. As a result, all the parts of this cabinet can be knock-down muck like Chinese toy puzzle blocks.
