Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, Wayfinding System
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center – known to staff as Gundy Lu – handles 14,000 admissions and 23,000 emergency visits each year. Equipping visitors to navigate the medical complex required a concerted effort. Designers, of which I was one, worked with staff to uncover challenges, develop a comprehensive wayfinding logic and implement a phased set of solutions that would demystify the experience of navigating Gundy Lu.
Tools developed for visitors included a complete interior and exterior wayfinding sign system and custom maps. All were specified with an eye toward the future. As Gundy Lu grows so will its need to help visitors navigate. Every piece in the wayfinding system was created to be easily updated – saving thousands of future maintenance dollars.
