Trainingcage for HeroRATs
APOPO is an initiative of researchers from Belgium and Tanzania. They developed a completely new method of African giant pouched rats to train and deploy for detecting landmines.
The rats are trained to smell samples of explosives and then they are tested on the field. This rapid and reliable detection technique is used daily in clearing landmines in Mozambique.
The rats are also trained to quickly and efficiently to detect tuberculosis in human spittle samples. The cage you see here, is specifically designed for this purpose.
