Adaptable Kids Furniture for IKEA

2nd year Uni project. The brief was to design a piece of furniture /range of furniture for a child’s room that can ‘grow with the child’ or be adaptable to be reconfigured to meet to their needs as they get older. The product is targeting the 4-12yrs old age group and their parents. The concept is mainly based on Erik H. Erikson’s child developmental theories in which he states that kids (around the above mentioned ages) are supposed to acquire skills like: personal control, to be able to choose (food, toy and clothing preference) and get the feeling of control and a sense of independence. Also, socialising with other children is very important as well. Kids can use and set up the furniture in several ways, giving them the freedom to control their environment. They can face each other which is more likely to trigger some social interaction compared to if they were facing the same direction. Sleepovers are also nurtured by the nature of the product, which helps social maturing.
