Portrait of a Noblewoman, by Lavinia Fontana, ca. 1580. The woman pictured wears dress that was common among noblewoman of the Northern Renaissance. Her chemise extends below the ends of her sleeves and just below her collar in a small ruffle. The inverted v at the front of her skirt, or overdress, makes her petticoat visible. She wears a jeweled belt with hanging cords that holds what looks like a pelt, which a marker of her status and wealth.
