The garment pictured here is a tunic from the Byzantine period, A.D. 300-1450, that was worn by men. It is decorated by circular roundels, clavi, and segmentae. The clavi are the long rectangular strips over the shoulders, similar to the segmentae, which were rectangular and star shaped medallions placed on the tunic. The decorative sections comprised the majority of production cost so when the linen part of the tunic became worn the medallions would be removed and restitched onto a new tunic.
