History of Costume Illustrated Digital Vocabulary List CH 17

In 1947, CHRISTIAN DIOR launched his 'Corolle' line, which was nicknamed the NEW LOOK, was drastically different from the wartime look. The ultra feminine look was characterized by soft, rounded shoulders, padded hips, tucked in waist, and copious amounts of pleated skirts. The rounded shoulders and hips were achieved with padding, and the small waist was cinched with FOUNDATION GARMENTS which were similar to corsets but only extended up past the waist. This particular dress would have been worn by women as a day dress.
