This is the final design that was used on the t-shirt. We chose to keep the color palette simple and let the line work and animated feel of the swarming bees do the talking.

The first concept sketch. The goal was to create a design that didn't invoke any thoughts of Winnie the Pooh--i.e. a more threatening and slightly ominous looking beehive.

The inked hive (this is not a vector, this is a hand drawn and inked illustration). Keeping the inking precise like this makes it easier to vectorize later in the process, while still retaining a sense of being hand-drawn.

Just for grins, I added some color to the final design using Photoshop.
