The Night Ministry

Firm: Wheeler Kearns Architects
Year: 2020
Type: Non-Profit / Commercial
Size: 21,000 SF
Role: Project Architect

The Night Ministry has renovated a three-story space to support the growing needs of the 44-year-old organization which provides housing, healthcare, and human connection to members of the Chicago community experiencing homelessness.
A former loading dock is converted into a new well-lit accessible entrance, featuring a large awning that provides shelter and protection from the busy street. The first floor houses The Crib – the organization’s overnight shelter for young adults, ages 18-24 – and includes a serving kitchen, administrative offices for staff, meeting rooms, and multi-purpose programming space for dining, social services, job assistance, and social activities. The facility is highlighted by a colorful and dynamic interior mural spanning the Crib’s multi-purpose area.
