A large mural of Alexander Calder play with a mobile spans the entire vertical wall, with visitors seeing only a portion of the entire work on each floor. Only by assimilating the pieces can viewers understand the full concept. As Calder plays with the mobile, he also subtly plays with visitors. Is he manipulating them or are visitors fully in control of their experience? The exhibit forces viewers to redefine the art exhibit experience.

Bend the Mind

The exhibit shows works of art by Alexander Calder, Joan Miro, and Klaes Oldenburg in the Uptown Movie Theater in Washington, DC, which was the chosen site for the project. In keeping with the 1960s vibe of the artwork, and the abstract nature of the selected pieces, the concept is Bend the Mind, and the exhibit is constructed to feel like a psychedelic trip with 21st century overtones. The colorful custom floor design combined with the layering of floors, with spaces open to below on each level, pushes visitors to think beyond the bounds of the ordinary as they continually catch glimpses of the levels below. A central glass elevator unites the space, bringing viewers smoothly from one floor to the next.
