Miss' ssippi - Set during the Civil War, ...and Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi by Marcus Gardley is a symbolic retelling of the Demeter Myth. Miss' ssippi, the narrator of the story wears an intricately crafted and engineered gown and shawl that moves and flows like the muddy waters of the Mississippi River.
Miss' ssippi
Jesus - Jesus is represented as two images, the tree of life and the hallucination of a young girl.
1860's swimwear - Two young girls go swimming in the Mississippi
A Meal - Demeter prepares breakfast for Jesus, Po'em, Blanche, and Cadence
A Rebirth - Damascus is hung on the tree of life after fleeing enslavement to search for his lost daughter, Po'em. He comes back to life as Demeter, like the Greek mythological character, who looks for her daughter Persephone in the underworld. Demeter is taken in by Cadence, a southern belle whose husband has abandoned her to fight for Confederates. A male actor plays both Damascus and Demeter.
