Ruminant Quarantine

Ruminant Quarantine - located in the westernmost waterway of the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro - attempts to rethink food safety by carefully scripting the way in which livestock are introduced into the United States. Part dock, part feedlot, part urban park; this project proposes a radical layering of sterile and non-sterile programs - allowing a constant glimpse to the cattle processing facility below. Like the multiple chambers a cow's stomach, the livestock are held in quarantine as they move from one stage of processing to the next. Eventually they pass through a series of thresholds, checking and rechecking for any remaining foreign pathogens as they leave the sterile space and are prepared for shipping.
