BBGHull is a computer program that parametrically generates hard-chine planing hull models from dimensional inputs. The program runs within Grasshopper, a free plug-in for the 3D modeling program Rhinoceros. The user simply varies the principal characteristics of the hull (length, beam, deadrise, etc.) and the 3D geometry updates in real-time in Rhinoceros. The program has proven to be effective for initial design. It has undergone extensive validation with other commercial software tools and is currently in use at Brunswick Boat Group’s Product Development and Engineering facility to evaluate potential designs at an early stage and assess the impacts of changes to a vessel’s key parameters. The user can also add advanced features like lifting strakes and propeller tunnels using additional custom components.
