Lotus
WEST LAFAYETTE – Lotus was an exercise in CNC design. The project originally called for a piece of furniture that is CNC manufactured. Lighting had a certain appeal to me both as a challenge and an opportunity. The problem was that CNC pieces are very flat. Even with fitted together they are not quite large enough for a light bulb and its components.
Light Drops
The first attempt at a solution, Light Drops, did not address the last issue very well and for that reason it failed. Lotus improved over Light Drops by rotating the CNC piece from vertically based to horizontally based. This allowed for larger vacuum-forms to be inserted and just made it easier to fit all the necessary components without risk of overheating.
