Extending Table

In September 2017 I was approached by private client who had seen a bench I had made on display at London design festival 17. She loved the bench but wanted a table version. After an initial design consultation and three meetings a decision was reached.

The Commission was to make an extending table to a very specific brief, that table had to be 1m in length, 800mm deep and have a hidden extension of 600mm and the mechanism should not be visible from the clients sofa even when extended. On top of this the table had to extend from the centre outward and couldn’t look like it was hiding parts i.e. must be sleek, clean and elegant.

The Legs and main body of the frame are made from American Black Walnut featuring two hand cut sliding dovetails. I hand selected all the boards so as to have consistent and matching grain and prepared the timber from rough sawn to planed on all four faces. All the time considering both the structural and aesthetic merit of the different components.
