The Transitional Wall - 1:100 scale Model - The wall creates suspense between the traditional Market Cross and the new insertion of the enclosed 'green' courtyard space.
The 'Green' Courtyard Space - The second space plays on the past and present use as a market place, creating a sense of enclosure and tranquility to be transformed for busy markets.
Old and New - A view from on of the surrounding shops shows the relationship between the old Market Cross and the new transitional wall, drawing key materials from the Cross to the Wall in a contemporary manor.
The revitalised Public Square - The Market Cross has a deep history of being at a crossroads for major traveling routes. Responding to this are the copper inlays on the floor depicting both direction and length of travel to the destinations marked on the Market Cross
Overall Model View - This image shows the relationship between the two spaces and how the atmosphere changes when passing through the transition
Overall Model View - A view from The Academy; as part of UWE, this university building holds dance and performing arts students who are encouraged to use these two spaces for performances and events.
Which Way Next? - A close-up of the Market Cross and copper inlays. This is one of the main focuses on market days and is transformed into a busy trading environment.
This introverted space creates a new experience within the town to promote social recreation; a place to meet friends and colleagues for lunch in the various surrounding cafes, a dynamic events space to experience performances by the university students at The Academy, or to simply relax and do some shopping at the various markets.
