Job Description

The UI Designer is a key member of the Engenious Design team. The Designer is an insightful and empathetic observer of users and their needs, translating these insights into visual design concepts that delight.

Designers collaborate with our Industrial Design team, Product Architects, Product Managers, Human Factors Researchers and Clients to create systems that make the world a better place. Our design work includes embedded systems with multi-language GUI’s plus mobile app development (iOS/Android). We create user interfaces for systems as simple as an ear thermometer or as complex as a life support ventilator.

This key team member is not afraid to go see how users interact with the systems we are designing, observing clinical practice in person, conducting interviews and generally partnering with clinicians to understand their viewpoints. They are equally comfortable talking to clients, project managers and engineering partners.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Apply research insights to understand user needs and resulting design considerations, then translating these insights into intuitive designs
Quickly create visual design concepts (storyboards, sketches, wireframes, illustrations, renders, and prototypes) based on user insights and product needs
Create rapid prototypes to validate design concepts with stakeholders and customers
Present concepts verbally and visually with the ability to explain design rationale to cross-functional stakeholders.
Interact with a world class team of engineers, technicians, designers, and others
Enjoy a variety of projects and people while doing meaningful work
See your designs help real people. We create medical devices that save and improve lives such as designing and building life-sustaining medical devices and other advanced electromechanical technology
Build a portfolio to be proud of with opportunities to work on medical and consumer products
POSITION DETAILS:

This is a full-time, permanent position. This position works from our Kansas City based office during core business hours.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in design (graphic, interaction, industrial) or related degree.
Proven experience as a UI designer with a strong portfolio exhibiting relevant work.
Demonstrated ability to develop user interface navigation maps/workflows, concept sketches, wireframes, storyboards, mockups, and final assets.
Effective communication skills and capacity to collaborate with software developers, and other designers.
Making visual aesthetics that are on-trend, help and do not hinder navigation and intuitive interfaces. Includes choice and use of typography, information hierarchy, on-screen graphical elements such as buttons, frames and other navigation or control elements.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience that translates to non-GUI interfaces such as simple alphanumeric displays, dedicated button/knob/switch inputs, visual indicators, audible or tactile outputs.
Experience with embedded systems or consumer electronics – not exclusively web/mobile phone interfaces only.
Proficiency in modern design tools (Adobe CC/XD, Figma, Miro, etc)
Experience in healthcare or other regulated industries a plus, but not required.
Design education that is beyond a UI/UX bootcamp – ideally graphic design or a related design degree.
