Assistant Professor of Practice in Industrial Design, Full-Time, Non-tenure track, Start Date: August 18, 2025
Responsibilities
The Department of Art & Design at Purdue University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Practice with expertise in Industrial Design to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in the Industrial Design program that integrate project-based learning including practical skills and theory. This is a full-time academic position with a focus on teaching and includes opportunities for promotion to Associate and Full Professor of Practice. Other duties include: advising and mentoring undergraduates, reviewing portfolios and resumes, and participating in Industrial Design and departmental events as well as other service duties including committee assignments or administration.
Qualifications
Candidates must have at minimum a Master’s degree in Industrial Design or a related Design area (must be completed by August 2025) and have teaching and/or industry experience. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate expertise in product design, with their portfolio providing examples that reflect that expertise. Candidates must also have experience advising or engaging students with professionals in industrial design and related fields.
Program/Department/School
The Industrial Design program is composed of five faculty members with a wide range of expertise and offers a four-year undergraduate BFA in Industrial Design and an MFA in Product Design and Interaction Design at the graduate level. The program is accredited by NASAD. The Industrial Design program is a competitive program with a rigorous review process and our graduates have over 90% placement in industry. Industrial Design is part of the Department of Art and Design which includes majors in Art Education, Art History, Design Studies, Integrated Studio Arts, Interior Design, Studio Arts & Technology, and Visual Communication Design.
The Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance stands as one of the ten departments/schools within the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University. The Rueff School encompasses the Departments of Art and Design, Theatre and Dance, Film and Video, and Music.
