These pieces are from the 5th Annual African American Ball in 2013. My client wanted something that suggested liveliness and the challenge was to attract a wider demographic.
My concept was “Soul Music” and “Nightlife.” I chose bright color scheme that was influenced by art from the Jazz Era and created visual hierarchy by using blocks of solid color of different sizes on the grid with a clear sans serif typeface. The 5 in the “5th” was enlarged to reinforce longevity in this event.
The poster also doubled as the cover to the event program. 4 different tickets were created for different levels of access so I used different color tear offs to help identify them. A collage was incorporated into the design reinforce the message of achievement and black history month with imagery.
