“Strength & Compassion” shares the emotional experiences documented while volunteering in eight countries by humanitarian, and former Navy SEAL, Eric Greitens.
The book was divided into eight chapters, one for each country. Each chapter began with an essay on a theme, the empathetic lesson learned from the experience. To reinforce the strength of this lesson, the theme word was set in large, bold sans serif type and filled with the faces of the people encountered in that country.
Photo selection and placement was choreographed throughout the book. Some photos were “cut” across page breaks to show that even though life can be disrupted people can still find joy and bring hope to others.
“Strength & Compassion” won 12 major awards, including First Prize for Illustrated Text in the Washington Book Publishers (WBP) Book Design and Effectiveness Awards and Winner for Photography and Grand Prize Winner for Competition at the 2009 New York Book Festival.
